On a visit to Szeged, the fifth largest city in Hungary, we went to see the paintings and sketches of Bob Dylan on exhibit.
We had lunch that day at a local favorite restaurant by a pond full of fish and ducks.
My hosts, Szylvia and Dorina from the tourism office of Szeged, chose this restaurant because it’s famous for fish soup. And everyone knows that tourists to Hungary must have the spicy fish soup with paprika at least once during their visit.
Then, for dessert I had baked cottage cheese with a syrup of forest berries. Again, this is a typical Hungarian dish to end the meal. Dorina ordered the same dessert and she said that this version was very good, as the syrup of forest berries was home-made.
THE ART NOUVEAU BUILDINGS
Returning to the centre of Szeged, we walked over to a beautiful art nouveau building called Reök Palace to see the dreamy watercolour-inspired exteriors and the beautiful flower staircase.
Actually, Szeged is famous for its art nouveau buildings. Aside from the Reök Palace, some other famous examples of art nouveau buildings include the Gróf palace, Deutsch Palace, the Szeged Water Tower and the Ungar- Mayer Palace.
PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES OF BOB DYLAN ON EXHIBIT
The city had organised a Bob Dylan exhibit inside Reök Palace. I already knew a little about it because there were posters all over promoting it. But before actually seeing the exhibit, I honestly thought that the Bob Dylan exhibit was about music. Or at least about photographs of him performing on tour.

It turns out that the Bob Dylan exhibit at Reök Palace features his art works. Yes, apparently Bob Dylan sketched and painted in his spare time, when he wasn’t playing music.
BOB DYLAN, THE ARTIST
“Did you know that Bob Dylan painted?” I asked Szylvia and Dorina. Frankly, I think Bob Dylan is a little too early for any of us to appreciate in terms of music. However, I knew of him as a famous musician, of course.
Both of them shook their heads. But it turns out that Bob Dylan is a surprisingly good sketchbook painter. He probably traveled around with a sketchbook and a watercolour kit, and painted quite quickly.
The paintings won’t win world art awards, in my humble opinion. However, they were certainly very pleasant to look at on a lovely summer afternoon in Szeged, living a Travelife.
