Arriving at Pemako Punakha is an experience that gently sets the tone for what lies ahead. With no direct road access to the resort, I am accompanied by Nahdorj, my personal butler who helps me with my bags. We cross a suspension bridge adorned with fluttering prayer flags. The crossing feels like a bridge between worlds, swaying in the wind as I leave behind the bustle of daily life and move toward Pemako, a word synonymous with Beyul (pronounced bay-yul), which refers to a sacred, hidden valley in the Himalayas.

There are only 21 luxury tented pool villas, each positioned to maximize privacy and spread across 60 acres, Pemako Punakha embodies the spirit of a Beyul—a peaceful, serene environment where the natural beauty and spiritual energy of the surroundings encourage reflection, calm, and a deeper connection with oneself and the world. The use of the name Pemako further emphasizes the resort’s commitment to offering guests a truly tranquil and transformative experience.

A luxury stay in Bhutan, especially in the tranquil surroundings of Punakha, offers a profound sense of peace and spiritual enrichment.
At the resort, time becomes a luxury, offering me a space for reflection and unhurried moments. This notion of the “luxury of time” is the experience that Pemako presents – allowing guests to reconnect with themselves and the beauty of the surroundings. It’s a destination where the rush of the outside world is forgotten, replaced by the calming rhythms of nature and the present moment.

Pemako Punakha embodies a deep sense of place—rooted in Bhutanese culture and designed for modern comfort. Each suite is a sanctuary, blending handcrafted furnishings with panoramic views that soothe the soul.

As I bask in nature’s embrace by the outdoor heated pool, I gain a deeper appreciation for the essence of water. Its purity and peaceful presence echo the serenity of this sacred valley. The gentle flow of the Mo Chhu River, the bottles of herbal-infused water thoughtfully placed in the villa, and the calm reflection in the private pool all become conduits for relaxation and clarity—an invitation to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the natural world.
I appreciate the attention to detail, where the copper fixtures in the bathroom glisten in the soft light, enhancing the resort’s blend of natural elements and modern luxury. Every aspect of Pemako Punakha has been thoughtfully curated to create an atmosphere of harmony—whether it’s the textures of the handcrafted furnishings or the scent of the surrounding forest air. These little touches do more than add aesthetic value; they evoke a deep sense of connection to the environment, enhancing the overall experience of peace and tranquility that defines this exceptional retreat.

LOTUS REALM SPA
I recommend a visit to the resort’s in-house Lotus Realm Spa, where one can choose from a variety of traditional treatments. I opted for a signature massage treatment, where the therapist employed expert techniques to ease my muscle tension. The spa’s philosophy is rooted in Sowa Rigpa, the traditional Bhutanese system of medicine, which focuses on restoring balance and promoting overall well-being. Each treatment is carefully designed based on the principles of this holistic practice, offering guests a deeply rejuvenating experience that nurtures both physical and emotional health.

EXPLORATION OF FLAVOURS
The resort’s culinary offerings are thoughtfully crafted to immerse guests in the rich heritage of Bhutan.
Soma, the all-day dining venue serves as a perfect introduction to this exploration. Here, I experienced a fusion of local flavors with international influences. The Chump Marp Thup, a traditional Bhutanese red rice porridge, was a rich and nourishing start to the day, its earthy notes complemented by the delicate textures of the rice.

For those seeking a deeper dive into the flavours of Bhutan, Alchemy House is a must-visit. Here, the chefs highlight Bhutan’s native ingredients, bringing forth dishes that are both simple and exquisite.

At Sura, the private dining space, diners can pair their dinner with a curated selection of fine wines and international whiskies. The Chef’s Table here is a celebration of seasonal ingredients, with each course offering an unexpected and delightful pairing that amplifies the flavors of the region.

Five Nectars Bar introduces the realm of inventive cocktails alongside Ara, a traditional Bhutanese liquor. The cocktails are served with local herbs and botanicals, ensuring each drink tells the story of Bhutan in a glass.

On the hotel grounds of Pemako, one will notice the fluttering flags. The experience of hoisting prayer flags is offered to guests as a cultural activity where participants can learn more about the sacred relationship between nature, spirituality, and self. The act of planting these flags intertwines personal prayer and collective good intentions within the tranquil landscapes of Bhutan. It is believed that the hoisting of the prayer flags will bring good luck, prosperity & long life.

HAPPINESS IS A PLACE
Punakha is one of Bhutan’s most revered valleys, rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. The valley is surrounded by verdant landscapes, where the fertile riverbanks are flanked by the majestic Himalayas. It is home to sacred sites like Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, where people come to seek blessings for health, fertility, and prosperity.
The sacred Punakha Dzong, often referred to as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” serves as a symbol of the nation’s sovereignty and religious devotion. Built in 1637 by the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, the Dzong is a sacred site that houses ancient relics and is the venue for Bhutan’s most important religious ceremonies, including royal weddings and coronations. It is revered as a place where divine energy flows freely, enhancing the spiritual experiences of all who visit. The dzong serves as a profound reminder of the interconnectedness between nature, spirituality, and Bhutanese culture.
